Excuses

A beautiful song by Alanis Morisette.....I think I've used all of these lines at some point in time in my life. Hopefully someday I'll learn to go beyond them.

Why no one will help me
I am too dumb I am too smart
They'll not understand me
I am lonely
They'll hate me
And there is not enough time
It's too hard to help me
And god wants me to work
No resting no lazy

These excuses how they served me so well
They've kept me safe
They've kept me stoic
They've kept me locked in my own cell

I'm too far from home
It takes far too much energy
And I cannot afford to
No one will ever see me

These excuses how they served me so well
They've kept me safe
They've kept me stoic
They've kept me locked inside my cell

These excuses how they're so familiar
They've kept me small
They've kept me blocked
They've kept me safe inside my shell

Bringing this into the light
Shakes their foundation
And it clears my side
Now my imagination
Is the only thing that limits
The bar that is raised to the heights

No one can have it all see
I have to they want me to
And I can't let them down
I'll never be happy

These excuses how they served me so well
They've kept me safe
They've kept me small
They've kept me locked inside my cell

These excuses how they're so familiar
They've kept me small
They've kept me stoic
They've kept me locked inside my cell

Music within

I grew up in the era of pop music and boy bands....music videos with style and dance, and sometimes, if you were lucky, a great concept to boot. We had desi bands, IndiPop as it was fondly called....and then there were the English songs that were all the rage!!!! Being a teenage girl, it was almost impossible to not fall for the charm and charisma of bands like Backstreet Boys and Boyzone....4 cute guys singing out their love, now how can any girl resist!!! Considering that I have always been a sucker for emotion, the songs and their sensitivity appealed to me all the more!

Even after I got out of my teens (man it feels like eons ago that I was a teenager!!!!), my fondness for these songs remained. Of course there were a lot of meaningful additions to the kind of music I heard.....I became (and still am) a huge fan of Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Elvis Presley to name a few. During my masters, I was initiated into rock by some of my friends, listening to songs from bands like Pink Floyd, Mettalica, Linkin Park and so on. Even though I haven’t got converted into a rock fan, I pride myself on the fact that I could broaden my horizons just a bit. My music tastes seemed to cover a bit of all genres (even though classical still remains untouched) and that was good enough.

However, my friends wouldn’t let me get away that easy!! I can’t count the number of debates and fights I’ve had over the years over the fact I continued to listen to pop music!!! It wasn’t just the boy bands, that I could’ve understood, but even the likes of Bryan and Celine weren’t spared and for the life of me I could never understand why!!! The argument was straight and simple, pop music exists simply to please the masses, especially girls! Serious musicians play because it is their passion, not for anyone else, and they sing about stuff that matters to them, rather than sing the words written by a random lyricist. But it’s just not possible for everyone to be a lyricist and a music composer and a singer, now that’s just unrealistic!! And I still stand by my argument, that many rock bands don’t even have songs with meaningful lyrics!!! So all said and done, my choice in music was my choice....and hence not open to debate!!!!

But recently, things have changed a bit. It happened while listening to the soundtrack  of a movie called Once (a beautiful movie I’d recommend to everyone) and just took off from there. I simply love the way each video on youtube links to so many others. You can go on this great journey of discovery and get to listen to songs you would’ve never known about otherwise!! Along this journey, I got to listen to songs by Adele and Alanis Morisette among others and I began to see the difference. All of their songs had a quality to them....raw emotion that seemed to connect to me in a very real way. You can listen and know, they’re singing about things that are close to their heart....expressing themselves in the way they know best...through music!!! Their music evolves with them, as they go through different experiences and you get to share that journey with them. As long as they are true to their music, success is theirs to have!!! I’m not saying that I hereby denounce other forms of music. Our good old Bollywood music (old and new alike) will stay with me right till the end, as will all the other stuff I listen to. But I can see now, the passion that can go behind composing a song and I have a greater appreciation for it! So I guess I just wanna say...”Thank you for the music....for giving it to me”!!!!

Whats in a name??

Marriage always has and always will be a hot topic of discussion and debate. And considering that most of my friends are of, so to speak, “marriageable age”, its not surprising that its a topic that comes up pretty frequently! When i think about it, i realise that through the years my ideas of marriage have changed quite a lot, as i have got more wordly-wise (hopefully!!).

There is something about marriage that always brings this queasy feeling....its this weird mixture of anticipation, excitement with a pretty generous dose of fear and apprehension!!! I mean come on....”together for life” seems like such a huge thing to say!! Sometimes i feel i’m just not grown up or reliable enough to make a call like that...but hey thats a different issue altogether!! As a girl there are many things that you have to be prepared to change when u decide to take the big leap. Having a husband is just one of the things....you take on a new family, a whole new set of quirky relatives, a new home and a new surname!! You become Mrs. XYZ and suddenly you feel so very different!!!

I used to be pretty okay with the entire concept of a name change! I’ve had pretty feminist discussions with many of my friends on various issues from...why does the girl always have to leave her home, her family...why does she always have to be the one who does all the housework, make all the adjustments and compromises....and so on and so forth. These discussions have made me realise that try as i may, i will never be much more than a weak feminist!!!hehe. Hell if you know me enough you’d probably have realised thats more of less true of many of the issues in life....i tend to partly like some points of both sides, therefore not supporting anything completely. I’m damn easy to beat in debates if you are smart enough to catch the paradoxes and lacunae in my arguments!!!hehe

Be that as it may, there was something exciting about taking on a new name. Somehow it  drove across the “you are someone’s wife” feeling pretty effectively. But recently i’ve begun to realise how much your name can actually mean to you. Well most people would say that Namrata is a quality that is absolutely wrong to describe me!!! But i kind of like my name, whether it suits me or not! When i first came to Bangalore, (it was my first time away from home) it wasn’t ever homesick. Everyone used to call me Namrata/Iyer/NRI (god i hate being called NRI) and things were fine. Then one day, out of the blue, my friend Shiv called me Namu, and i swear it almost brought tears to my eyes! Its what i’m always called at home, and being called Namu always brings me a step closer to people, makes me feel comfortable as if i’m with family!!(God, I’ll always love Shiv for this!!!)  But i guess thats the power of a name that you’ve lived with your whole life!

Without realising it, your name is connected to your definition of you! And its not just about the first name, it extends to your surname too! Right from your place of origin, your character traits to your nature to being a well rehearsed topic of conversation...your name is part of so many things that are a part of you! Not to mention being an indelible connection to your family both past and present! Is it really necessary then, for a girl to give this up when she gets married? Its true that she is becoming a part of a new family. But in today’s day and age, that doesn’t come at the cost of letting go of your old family! With travel and communication becoming so efficient, you can be a part of your family no matter how many oceans separate you! So its about taking on a new family for her and the exact same thing applies to the guy too (it does and it should)! Then why should the change be one sided only. Is it really necessary to change your surname to tell the world that you two are husband and wife? Is this giving up of a surname in part responsible for the desire to have a son so that (as they soooo love to say in movies) the family name lives on?!!

I can see the practical arguments against this...... if the husband and wife have different names then what surname would you give the kids....how would you define your family then..and so on!! Truth be told i don’t have any brilliant answers to any of these questions! And i’m not necessarily saying that i wouldn’t change my surname post marriage either. I briefly toyed with the idea of just adding on the 2nd surname..... Mrs. Namrata Iyer-XYZ (shit, even with the XYZ it feels like a heavy thing to write!!!). But after living with a super long middle name like Ramchandran, 2 surnames just feels like too much of a burden to carry for life!!!I guess all i’m saying is, I’d feel sad giving up my surname....even if its a relatively small thing, it would be yet another link to my past i’d be leaving behind at the start of this journey called marriage!!

Agony Aunt

I’ve always prided myself at being a good listener. Be it friends or family, I’ve always enjoyed getting people to talk and confide in me....problems, doubts, love stories....i’m game for anything!!And the tougher a nut to crack the better (there’s something exceedingly satisfying about getting people who are inherently silent to talk to you....lord knows they can turn into some of the most prolific talkers once u break the barrier....its fun!!!! J) This quality has allowed me to think of myself as a very successful agony aunt type of person and i’m pretty proud of it too :)

Unfortunately,in my case, this ability to listen is combined with a great love of talking!!!!As some people would say, i am a bit too fond of the sound of my own voice!!! Its not without reason that my teacher in nursery had labelled me “Grandmother” within days of knowing me! I have the capacity to talk non-stop, irrespective of whether or not i’m making sense!! The worst side of this is brought out if someone asks me for advice....thats just it!!! Especially if its with regards to future plans or a broken heart...man there ain’t no stopping me!!! I’ll have an endless list of questions..full on analysis aimed at helping you decipher exactly what you are feeling. Steps as to how you can deal with the situation or which is the most suitable path to take! Man, the sheer clarity of thought would make anyone think that i can deal with anything. Little do they know how quickly this clarity goes out of the window when a problem comes-a-knocking on my door!!!

Well most of the time my approach seems to work well with my friend. Present all the pros and cons and lend objectivity to an apparently confusing situation. But once in a while, you tend to cross the line. The advice stops being useful and just ends up adding to the confusion and instead of helping someone I end up making the situation worse. Good intentions and all set aside, I realise i’ve messed up. If only there were some alarm bell that would go off in my head warning me that an advice overdose is happening, it would be such a great help (this goes pretty high up on the wish list below a mute button for my voice...i always end up speaking loudly or even worse, laughing, at exactly the wrong time!!!)

For all those friends who’ve stuck with me despite all my constant talking, nagging, scolding and sometimes agonising advice.....you guys are the best!!! :)

The Pile

Having lived in a single room in the hostel for a few years now, i kinda have this very well-defined idea of my space!!! And you sort tend to apply your own unique set of standards (in my case these r prob way below the average) to the condition of the room. So even though my room would seem a mess to any outsider, I always tend to judge things relatively.....cleaner than last week, or dirtier coz of so n so unavoidable reason and hence acceptable!!! As long as i can find stuff in the room and can physically bear to liive in it, things are all fine!!!hehe....But a recent visit by my sister forced me to see things in a different light. It was kinda disappointing when she thought my room was a dump and hey her standards arent even that high!!! :( While its true that most horizontal surfaces in the room seem to be covered with clothes or books, i seem to manage perfectly fine yaar....especially considering the meagre amount of time i actually spend in my room!!! Anyway, this whole episode inspired me to write a small poem dedicated to my room. So enjoy!!! :)

In my room there is a bed

And on that bed there is a pile

A pile thats over-flowing with clothes

A pile that a testament to my style!!!

Clothes from today,from yesterday

Clothes from God knows when!!!

A pile thats been there for so long

I think it was there when i moved in!!

Wash and wash till my hands go numb

Wash till my palms go dry!

The pile never seems to diminish a whit

No matter how hard i try!!! :-(

It sits like a king in the middle of my room

Occupying more space than i do!

The pile: an ode to my tawdriness

My room wouldn’t feel the same without you!!! :-)

Family

Man is a social animal they say. Through time, the concept of society has evolved to help us better survive the challenges nature and life in general sends our way. And the central concept..the very basic unit of society is family. A set of individuals, related by blood….people who, for better or for worse, are ,if nothing else, biologically connected to you for the length of your life.

Now people have varying definitions of families. Mine has always been an extremely self-limiting one. I have grown up in what people call a nuclear family….mom, dad, sister and that’s it. And even if I do include my immediate relatives, it’d still be a pretty small sized family (I know of people who have 10 siblings and stuff….my mind cant even begin to comprehend that kind of scale!!!). When I was a kid, I used to always think that things are absolutely perfect…my family is just great. Its amazing the things that can go unnoticed (either consciously or subconsciously) when you are a kid….and I think as kids we fight real hard to preserve the belief that all things are hunky dory in life. Well it wasn’t too long before I realised that things are not perfect in my family. In fact if you took a close enough look, there was enough family drama to make Ekta kapoor very very happy. Weird interfering relatives, disagreements among siblings, tragic events and super-human courage and will power…we seemed to have it all. One would think, that having so many stories to narrate would make one pretty happy. But then having a dysfunctional family is everything but a happy thing. And all around me I’d see friends whose family seemed perfectly fine…united and happy!!!! And that would just make things worse….why is it that things don’t seem to work just when it comes to my people???

And to make matters worse, depending on which side is telling the story, the people who are close to you might just seem to be in the wrong. I struggled against that for years…still do I feel. Call it stupid, blind loyalty if you like, but I refused to accept that anybody I loved could make mistakes. Its taken some growing up, but I’ve finally accepted that some things though unpleasant are true. That the people I love, wonderful as they all are, are still in the end…human!!! No one is perfect….and everyone is just as liable to make mistakes and wrong calls of judgement. All of us, at some point in time, have said things we later regret, hurt people or done things to distance people we love. Its all a part of life…….a part of who we are. We make mistakes and we learn, and hopefully experience makes us better people (hopefully sooner rather than later!!!). And if you have enough close friends, they’ll tell you that it’s the same with them too. Each of us has stories to tell, some happy…many sad! While some do seem to be luckier than the others, families are the same no matter where you go.

Times are changing….and now friends are more like family to most of us. But I don’t think families will ever become defunct. No matter what our definition of family may be, but I think we all rely on it more than we realise. We take it for granted too, that’s for sure. But knowing that your family is out there….it gives a sense of belonging that can never be replaced!!! Call it dysfunctional, or call it unique…whatever it may be…..Family to akhir family hoti hai J

Breaking the shackles

Before i start this post, let me put a disclaimer to all the guys out there (not like a thousand guys are gonna read this, but still!!! ). This may not be a post all of you are comfortable reading. It requires you to have made your peace with all the "facts of life", so read on if you have the stomach for it!

A few days ago, i found myself reading an interesting article in the Hindu (somehow reading tht paper makes me feel much less dumb..its nice!!!hehe) about this man who had taken up the task of devising an easy and cheap method of manufacturing sanitary napkins for women!!(http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/society/article2875390.ece?homepage=true) While he was motivated by the poor and unhygienic methods used by his own wife during her periods, his efforts to figure out a better alternative were actually met with a lot of disgust and disapproval by his family! While he has now gone on to establish his initiative in many states across the country, it amazed me that the women in his life were the ones that supported him the least!!Is this topic really so taboo that they;d rather not talk about it than have a healthier option for their own good??!

I for one found myself amazed by tht guy's sensitivity. Most guys are either completely unaware of this whole concept, willfully ignore it or think its just one more excuse used by girls to get their way!!! A majority don't have a single clue what girls actually go through during their cycle, let alone the pitfalls that come with it be it pain or body ache or weakness!!! I once had a debate with my close friends about this...cursing all guys for being so dense and so awkward about this whole issue. It used to irk me that when girls used to go home half-day coz of their periods, u'd have guys irritating u like hell, demanding to know what happened to her and absolutely not taking the hint when u say she's not well or something!!!More often than not, unless a guy lives in a home with a significant number of women, they can go thru their whole adolescence not having a clue what a menstrual cycle actually is!! Having a girlfriend can be a real eye opener for guys that way!!!hehe. Seriously, if guys could just be a little more sensible and sensitive about the whole issue then our lives would be so much easier!!!

But then my friend came up with a very valid point....why should girls expect guys to have this divine understanding of whats going on?? Why should they have to guess at the real reason their friends are going home early? Whats stopping us girls from telling them the straight up that the xyz girl is just having menstrual cramps or whatever?!! If we being girls, for whom monthly periods are a fact of life, can feel awkward about bringing up this topic then why should we even expect guys to be comfortable with this? Though i may consider myself modern, maybe there isn't tht much difference between me and the scores of other women who are just as bound by senseless traditions! i may not go into isolation or anything, but i'd still think twice before going to religious place/function during my cycle.....knowing full well that my sentiments and my physical state have absolutely no connection! Those rules were made for a reason....my mom's take on it is, that considering the amount of physical labor women in earlier days had to do, periods were a time of the month when they were legitimately asked to rest and take a break from work. When that got twisted out of control i have no clue....but it still doesn't justify our blind acceptance of it!

Well, if a man can break the shackles of society, and make a difference....maybe there's hope for the rest of us yet!!! Amen to that!!!
